Stephen Powers (b. 1968 Philadelphia) is a painter that is equally at home in the museum and on the street. His current show at the Brooklyn Museum shows his development of a new style of painting, rooted in the visual vernacular of Coney Island, where he was first inspired to paint in 1999. His wall for Coney Art Walls references his original muse in Coney Island, Pete's Clam Bar. Powers layers his paintings like Pete layers the signage on his building. Powers caught up to Pete and thanked him for the years of inspiration, and Pete shrugged off the compliment, “I only hang ’em like that to keep the rain out”.
